The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has suffered a major setback in Assam ahead of next year's assembly elections. A total of 18 leaders, including senior state leader and former Union Minister Rajen Gohain, have resigned from the party. Rajen Gohain submitted his resignation to state BJP president Dilip Saikia.
Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has suffered a major blow in Assam. Former Union Minister and four-time BJP MP Rajen Gohain has resigned from the party. Along with him, a total of 17 other members also submitted their resignations from the party. Rajen Gohain conveyed this decision through a letter addressed to state BJP president Dilip Saikia. In the letter, he stated that he is immediately stepping down from the party's primary membership and all responsibilities.
Reason for Resignation
Speaking to the media, Rajen Gohain said that he took this step because the BJP failed to fulfill its promises to the people of Assam and neglected the interests of local communities, while outsiders were allowed to settle in the state. He also reiterated that he is immediately stepping down from all party responsibilities and primary membership.
According to sources, most of the resigning members are from Upper and Central Assam. This move could potentially cause damage to the party in the state.
Rajen Gohain's Political Journey
Rajen Gohain represented the Nagaon parliamentary constituency from 1999 to 2019. Additionally, from 2016 to 2019, he served as the Minister of State for Railways. During his time in the BJP, he also held the position of state president. Rajen Gohain is a tea garden owner by profession, and his sphere of influence extends to several other areas. His resignation is expected to impact the organizational strength of the BJP in Assam.
Currently, the BJP government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, is in power in Assam. The party aims to secure a hat-trick of consecutive victories in the state. However, the resignations of Rajen Gohain and 18 other leaders could increase challenges for the BJP.
