Prime Minister Modi will virtually join the ASEAN Summit in Malaysia next week. The meeting will discuss strengthening the India-ASEAN strategic partnership, security, economic cooperation, and bilateral relations.
ASEAN Summit: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday that he will virtually participate in the ASEAN-India Summit to be held in Malaysia next week. He conveyed this information to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim over the phone. In a message shared on ‘X’, the Prime Minister said that he congratulated Anwar Ibrahim on Malaysia's ASEAN chairmanship and wished success for the upcoming summits.
Significance of ASEAN-India Summit
Modi stated that he is looking forward to further strengthening the ASEAN-India comprehensive strategic partnership by participating in the summit. Meetings of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will be held in Malaysia from October 26 to 28. Malaysia has also invited leaders of other dialogue partner countries, including US President Donald Trump.
History of ASEAN-India Relations
ASEAN-India dialogue relations began in 1992 with the establishment of sectoral partnership. It transformed into a full dialogue partnership in December 1995 and a summit-level partnership in 2002. Bilateral relations between India and ASEAN were elevated to a strategic partnership in 2012.
Cooperation among Member Countries
The 10 member countries of ASEAN include Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, and Cambodia. Over the past few years, bilateral cooperation between India and ASEAN has significantly increased, focusing on trade and investment, as well as the security and defense sectors.
