A Special Fast for Women

The Rishi Panchami fast is especially observed by women. According to religious beliefs, this fast is performed to get rid of Rajaswala dosha. In ancient times, women were kept away from certain religious and domestic activities during menstruation. It is believed that violating any rules during this period can lead to dosha. By fasting and worshipping on Rishi Panchami, this dosha is eliminated.

Importance of Rishi Panchami

This is not a traditional festival but a day to pay homage to the Saptarishis. The seven sages – Kashyapa, Atri, Bharadwaja, Vashistha, Gautama, Jamadagni, and Vishwamitra – are considered symbols of knowledge and penance in Hinduism. They are believed to be incarnations of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh. By worshipping them on Rishi Panchami, a person's sins are washed away, and peace and prosperity enter their life.

Worship Method and Tradition

On this day, one wakes up early in the morning and takes a bath, especially bathing in the water of a river, pond, or well is considered auspicious. Then, the observer of the fast wears clean clothes and prepares the worship place. In the worship, idols or pictures of the Saptarishis are placed and worshipped. The worship materials include flowers, अक्षत (Akshat - unbroken rice grains), water, incense, lamp, and Naivedya (offering of food). During the worship, mantras of the Saptarishis are chanted, and the Vrat Katha (fasting story) is listened to.

Religious Tale and Belief

Legend has it that a woman did not follow the rules during menstruation in her previous birth. As a result, she faced many difficulties in her next life. When she observed the Rishi Panchami fast, she was freed from this dosha. Since then, it has been a tradition that women get rid of the unknown sins of their lives by fasting on this day.
