Modern vegetable centers will be established in 534 blocks across Bihar. The scheme will provide fair prices to farmers, employment to villagers, and fresh and affordable vegetables to urban dwellers. Women's empowerment and self-employment are also part of this initiative.
Patna: Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced a major scheme for the people of Bihar. He stated that modern vegetable centers will be established in 534 blocks across the state. The objective of this initiative is to provide employment to villagers, ensure fair prices for farmers, and make fresh and affordable vegetables available to urban residents. The Chief Minister said that this scheme will help provide pure and quality vegetables to people in every district of Bihar.
Employment Opportunities from the Scheme
The Chief Minister clarified that this scheme will increase employment opportunities in rural areas. The operation of vegetable centers will be in the hands of local people, providing them with employment as well as opportunities for economic empowerment. Local youth and women will be involved in tasks such as operation, storage, packaging, and marketing. This initiative will strengthen the rural economy and also help improve the living standards of farmers.
Direct Benefits for Farmers
Nitish Kumar stated that farmers will get the opportunity for direct sales through these vegetable centers. This will eliminate the role of middlemen, and farmers will receive fair prices. Modern cold storage facilities will be provided for storing vegetables, which will reduce the problem of crop spoilage. Additionally, farmers will be provided with access to modern agricultural techniques and training, which will increase their yield and improve quality.
Affordable and Fresh Vegetables for Urban Dwellers
The second objective of establishing vegetable centers is to ensure the availability of fresh and affordable vegetables to urban residents. The Chief Minister stated that this scheme will serve as a means to directly provide farmers' produce to urban dwellers. This will not only benefit consumers but also strengthen the local agricultural economy.
Women's Empowerment
Nitish Kumar described women's empowerment as a significant part of the scheme. He said that under the Chief Minister's Women Employment Scheme, women will be provided with financial assistance of ₹10,000. Additionally, up to ₹2 lakh in extra assistance will be available for self-employment. As of September 2025, approximately 75 lakh women have benefited under this scheme.
Other Development Schemes of Bihar Government
The Chief Minister also provided information on other state schemes. These include the Jeevika scheme, which focuses on women's groups and employment generation. Under the Ujjwala scheme, free gas connections are being provided to poor families. The vegetable centers scheme, in coordination with these initiatives, will contribute to the state's development and rural empowerment.
Widespread Impact of the Scheme
This initiative will ensure pure vegetables reach people in all 38 districts of the state. The rural economy will improve, and urban dwellers will have a better consumer experience. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's initiative will provide an opportunity for balanced development in both rural and urban areas of Bihar.
