The weather in Odisha, an eastern state of the country, continues to deteriorate. The Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rain warning for the state's coastal and southern districts starting Wednesday. According to the IMD, a deep depression formed over the Bay of Bengal is moving towards the Odisha coast at a speed of 17 kilometers per hour.
Weather Update: The upper low-pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal has gradually intensified into a deep depression. This system is moving towards the Odisha coast, leading to heavy rainfall on Thursday. The state government has deployed personnel and machinery in vulnerable districts to manage the situation. Continuous heavy rainfall has been occurring in all parts of the state, especially in coastal and southern regions, since Wednesday. The Meteorological Department issued a heavy rain warning for all 30 districts of Odisha on Thursday.
Pressure System Forming in the Bay of Bengal
The IMD stated that this deep depression developed over the Bay of Bengal is a precursor to a cyclonic storm. Under its influence, b winds and heavy rainfall are expected in the state. According to experts, over 20 centimeters of rain could occur in Puri and Jagatsinghpur districts, while an Orange Alert (7 to 20 centimeters) has been issued for 14 districts and a Yellow Alert (7-11 centimeters) for the remaining 14 districts.
The IMD reported that the deep depression formed over the Bay of Bengal on Wednesday night and is rapidly moving in a south-southeast direction. Its central position on the morning of October 2 was as follows:
- 190 kilometers south-southeast of Gopalpur
- 190 kilometers east-southeast of Kalingapatnam (Andhra Pradesh)
- 230 kilometers south of Puri (Odisha)
- 250 kilometers east of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh)
- 310 kilometers south-southwest of Paradeep (Odisha)
Due to this deep depression, the risk of b winds and heavy rainfall has increased in the state's coastal districts.
Alert for Fishermen and Marine Activities
The Odisha government has taken precautionary measures by deploying personnel and machinery in vulnerable districts. Rescue teams and emergency services are prepared for rainfall and potential flood situations, especially in coastal and southern districts. The IMD has warned fishermen not to venture into the sea until October 3. Under the influence of the deep depression, squally winds of 40-50 kilometers per hour are expected over the central and northern Bay of Bengal, which could reach up to 75 kilometers per hour by October 2.
Additionally, all ports in the state have been advised to hoist 'Local Cautionary Signal Number-Three' (LC-3) to alert coastal areas and mariners for safety.
