Rohit Sharma, who has expressed his desire to play for Mumbai in the knockout matches of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT), has begun preparations to strengthen his team.

Sports News: Former Indian captain Rohit Sharma has retired from T20I cricket, but he is still keen to play in domestic cricket. According to a report by the Times of India, Rohit has expressed his desire to play for Mumbai in the knockout matches of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT). This will be the biggest phase of the domestic T20 tournament, which will be played in Indore from December 12 to December 18.

Currently, Rohit is part of the Indian team in a three-match ODI series against South Africa. The final match of this series will be played on Saturday, December 6, after which he may be available for the SMAT knockouts.

Rohit Sharma's Return to Mumbai Squad

A source from the Mumbai Cricket Association stated that Rohit Sharma has expressed his desire to play for Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy knockouts. The Mumbai team is currently in Elite Group A and is at the top with 16 points, having won all four matches played in the league round in Lucknow. Therefore, the team's qualification for the knockouts is considered almost certain.

Besides Rohit, experienced players like Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube are also playing in the team, who can play a crucial role in strengthening Mumbai. Rohit's return could prove to be a significant advantage for the team, both mentally and technically.

BCCI's Domestic Cricket Rule

Earlier this year, the BCCI had mandated that any Indian player who is not part of the national team or is recovering from an injury must play domestic cricket. Under this rule, Rohit also wishes to be available for Mumbai to guide young players and enhance the team's strength by playing alongside them.

Rohit Sharma is currently in excellent form. In the ODI series against South Africa, he has played innings of 57 and 14 runs respectively. Now, in domestic T20 cricket, his focus is on the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy knockout matches.

In T20 cricket, Rohit Sharma is the first Indian batsman to score a century for the national team. During SMAT in 2007, he played a century-knock of 101 runs for Mumbai against Gujarat. To date, Rohit has played a total of 463 T20 matches, accumulating 12,248 runs, including 8 centuries and 82 half-centuries. In international T20 cricket, he has scored 4,231 runs in 159 matches.
