RPF and GRP recovered approximately ₹36 lakh hidden in a backpack at DD Upadhyaya Junction in Chandauli. The individual was taken into custody and handed over to the Income Tax Department.
Chandauli: Railway security forces have seized a significant amount of cash at DD Upadhyaya Junction, one of Asia's largest railway junctions, located in Chandauli, Uttar Pradesh. Personnel from DD Upadhyaya RPF and GRP recovered approximately ₹36 lakh from an individual. The accused person was taken into custody as they could not produce documents related to the recovered money, and the investigation is being conducted in collaboration with the Income Tax Department.
Suspicious Individual Spotted on Foot Over Bridge
Under the directives issued by senior officials to curb crime in railways, an intensive patrolling and checking campaign was being carried out at the station late Wednesday night, led by RPF Station Master Pradeep Kumar Rawat.
During the inspection, personnel noticed a suspicious individual on the station's foot over bridge. The person was carrying a backpack and other belongings. Suspecting unusual activity, the personnel questioned the individual.
₹35,60,000 Recovered During Search
The individual claimed that the bag contained only daily essentials. However, the personnel grew suspicious of this response and proceeded to search the bag. A total of ₹35,60,000 was found during the search.
The personnel requested the individual to present documents pertaining to the money, but the person was unable to produce any. Subsequently, they were taken into custody for questioning.
Accused Stated Cash Was Being Transported from Varanasi to Bengal
The individual taken into custody was identified as Ashish Dua, a resident of Medinipur in West Bengal. During interrogation, Ashish stated that he was transporting the said cash from Varanasi to Bengal.
RPF Inspector Pradeep Kumar Rawat informed that Ashish Dua possessed no valid documentary proof for the recovered cash. Therefore, the Income Tax Department in Varanasi was immediately notified about the matter.
Income Tax Department Takes Action at the Station
Upon receiving the information, Income Tax Department officials arrived at DD Upadhyaya Station. The recovered cash and Ashish Dua were handed over to the Income Tax Department. The department has commenced further investigation and is questioning Ashish about the source and purpose of the funds.
