SA20 Season 4 Auction: Opportunities for Domestic Players, Big Names in Focus

Former South African all-rounder Chris Morris believes that the player auction for the fourth season of the SA20 league, scheduled for September 9, will create good opportunities for domestic cricketers.

Sports News: The player auction for the fourth season of South Africa's popular franchise T20 league, SA20, is set to take place on September 9 in Johannesburg. This year's auction is considered the biggest SA20 Auction to date, with six teams having a total of 84 slots to fill their squads and a budget of $7.4 million (approximately ₹61 crore) to fill them.

Former South African all-rounder Chris Morris believes that domestic players could get excellent opportunities in this auction, as many teams may rely on local talent to balance their squads.

Opportunity to Splash the Cash in the Auction

Morris said while speaking to 'SuperSport':

'Auctions are always exciting, no matter which tournament they are for. But this SA20 auction is special because many big names have been retained and many new wild card players have also been included. Some teams have a lot of money to spend, while some teams have already filled half of their squad, leaving them with less budget. Domestic players will benefit from this.'

Which Players Will Be in Focus?

Several big international and domestic stars are in the spotlight for this year's auction. According to Morris:

  • Aiden Markram – Not retained and will be among the big attractions of this auction.
  • Dewald Brevis – The young sensation, known as 'Baby AB', could also fetch a high bid in this auction.
  • Kwezi Mafaqa – Fast bowler, who is likely to attract intense bidding among teams.
  • Rassie van der Dussen – Due to his experience and stability, he could also command a good price.

The last date for registration of local and foreign players has been set as August 18, 2024.

Big Names Retained

Before the auction, SA20 franchises have retained several international stars, including:

  • Nicholas Pooran (West Indies)
  • Andre Russell (West Indies)
  • Sunil Narine (West Indies)
  • Jos Buttler (England)
  • Jonny Bairstow (England)

The presence of these players is sure to increase both the level and excitement of the tournament.

The fourth season of SA20 will begin on December 26, 2024. In the T20 league format, this tournament is not only giving South African cricket a new identity at the international level, but it is also giving domestic players an opportunity to showcase their talent on the big stage.
