This final day of Pitru Paksha, which began with Bhadrapad Purnima, holds special significance for paying homage to the ancestors. Bathing in a holy river in the morning, performing Tarpan and Pind Daan, feeding Brahmins, and giving charity are considered auspicious on this day. Additionally, worshipping the Peepal tree and circumambulating it seven times while lighting a lamp with oil and black sesame seeds is believed to help in obtaining the blessings of the ancestors.
Sarva Pitru Amavasya 2025: The Last Day of Pitru Paksha
According to the Panchang, Pitru Paksha begins on Bhadrapad Purnima and lasts for 15 days. During this time, various religious rituals are performed to remember the ancestors and for the peace of their souls. The last day of Pitru Paksha is celebrated on the Amavasya of Ashwin month, which is called Sarva Pitru Amavasya. It is believed that performing special puja, Tarpan, and Pind Daan on this day helps in obtaining the blessings of the ancestors.
Sarva Pitru Amavasya Time and Auspicious Muhurat
Sarva Pitru Amavasya begins at 12:16 AM on September 21st and will last until 1:23 AM on September 22nd. Several auspicious Muhurats are designated on this day, during which performing puja and Tarpan are considered particularly fruitful.
The auspicious Muhurats are as follows:
- Kutup Muhurat: 11:50 AM to 12:38 PM
- Rouhin Muhurat: 12:38 PM to 1:27 PM
- Aparahna Kaal: 1:27 PM to 3:53 PM
It is believed that Tarpan and Pind Daan performed during the auspicious Muhurat bring the blessings of the ancestors.
What to do during Sarva Pitru Amavasya
On the day of Sarva Pitru Amavasya, there is a tradition of waking up early and bathing in a holy river. If this is not possible, one can bathe at home with Gangaajal mixed in the water. After this, Tarpan and Pind Daan should be performed for the ancestors.
It is also considered auspicious to feed a cow, dog, crow, deities, and ants on this day. Along with this, feeding Brahmins and donating according to one's ability are also considered beneficial for obtaining the blessings of the ancestors.
Importance of the Peepal Tree
There is also a tradition of worshipping the Peepal tree on the day of Sarva Pitru Amavasya. It is believed that the ancestors reside in the Peepal tree. On this day, one should circumambulate the tree seven times and light a lamp of mustard oil with black sesame seeds under the tree.
If possible, a Peepal tree can also be planted near a temple. It is believed that this brings auspicious results, and on the last day of Pitru Paksha, peace and blessings of the ancestors are obtained.
