Sikkim Landslide: Sikkim has once again been hit by a natural disaster. A landslide occurred in the Yangthang area of West Sikkim late on Thursday night following heavy rainfall, resulting in the deaths of four people and three individuals still missing. This incident has sent shockwaves not only through the local community but across the entire state. Police, local residents, and security forces are actively engaged in relief and rescue operations.
Major Accident Due to Landslide in Yangthang Late at Night
A sudden landslide occurred in the Yangthang region on Thursday night. Due to the torrential rain, the water level of the Hum river rose to a dangerous level, carrying a significant amount of debris with its b current. Four lives were lost in this incident, while three people are reported to be missing so far.
Videos shared by the police show officials and locals standing in the fast-flowing water, using ropes and other equipment. These visuals highlight the dire nature of the situation.
Bravery of Police and Locals
In these challenging circumstances, the Sikkim Police and local residents displayed immense courage. With the assistance of SSB (Sashastra Seema Bal) personnel, they constructed a temporary bridge over the flooded Hum river using logs and ropes. This makeshift bridge enabled the rescue of two women.
Regrettably, one of the women succumbed to her injuries after reaching the hospital. The other woman is in critical condition and is currently undergoing treatment. Police and rescue teams are still continuing their efforts to locate the three missing individuals.
Officials Provide Information
Providing details about the incident, SP of Gyalshing district, Shering Sherpa, stated, "Our team acted swiftly. With the help of local residents and security forces, the injured were transported to the hospital. However, one woman could not be saved. The other is severely injured, and her condition remains a cause for concern."
Heavy Rains Exacerbate Difficulties
Sikkim has been experiencing continuous rainfall for the past several days. Consequently, the occurrence of landslides has increased in many parts of the state. Police reports indicate that in addition to the incident on Thursday night, several other small and large landslides have taken place in the area, causing damage to roads and bridges. The heavy rainfall has led to the disruption of connectivity for many villages, potentially leading to shortages of essential supplies and medicines for the residents.
Second Major Incident This Week
It is noteworthy that a similar tragedy occurred in Sikkim earlier this week. Late on Monday night, a woman died in a landslide in the Geyzing district. Police reported that 45-year-old Bishnu Maya Portel, a resident of Thangshing village, was asleep in her home when a landslide suddenly struck, causing her house to collapse under the debris. This accident was also attributed to the persistent rainfall.
