Congress MP Sonia Gandhi called the central government's new definition of the Aravalli mountain range 'a death warrant'. She expressed concern over mining exemptions and violations of environmental rules, demanding immediate reforms.
New Delhi: Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi launched a sharp attack on the central government over the recent changes in the definition of the Aravalli mountain range. She called it 'a death warrant' for the Aravalli hills. The Aravalli range, stretching from Gujarat through Rajasthan to Haryana, has long played a crucial role in Indian geography, environment, and history.
The Supreme Court, on November 20, accepted the new definition of the Aravalli hills proposed by the central government. Under this, any hill less than 100 meters in height will no longer be subject to mining restrictions. Congress has termed this a serious threat to the environment and local communities. Sonia Gandhi stated that through this decision, the Modi government has virtually issued a death warrant for the hills. Illegal mining has already damaged the Aravallis in many parts.
Congress's Sharp Reaction to Government Policy

Congress alleged that the central government's policy demonstrates severe neglect towards the environment. Sonia Gandhi stated that this is an open invitation to mining mafias, as there are now no restrictions on 90 percent of the hills in the region that are less than 100 meters in height. She added that this poses a serious threat to the local ecosystem, wildlife, and water conservation.
Violation of Forest Conservation Act
Sonia Gandhi described the government policies as a violation of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. She said that deforestation and the eviction of local communities from forests go against the spirit of this act. Congress urged the Centre to immediately withdraw the amendments made to the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980, and the Forest Conservation Rules, 2022.
Supreme Court Recommendations
The Supreme Court bench, headed by former Chief Justice B.R. Gavai, approved the definition of Aravalli hills and ranges on behalf of the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change. The Court also accepted recommendations for steps to be taken to ensure sustainable mining and prevent illegal mining. The court directed state governments and the Centre to adhere to environmental protection standards and effectively implement mining-related rules.
