A Major Start to Starlink's India Mission
Starlink has received approval from the Indian government to commence its satellite internet services by the end of July 2025. Following this approval, the company has scheduled this special two-day demo to showcase its security and technical standards.
According to reports, during this event, Starlink will conduct a live demonstration of network security, data transmission, and service stability based on its Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) technology. This event in Mumbai could prove to be a decisive step for the company towards license-based operations in India.
SpaceX Establishes Three Ground Stations
Starlink's parent company, SpaceX, has laid the groundwork for its network infrastructure in India. The company has established three ground stations in Mumbai, which will serve as key hubs for the satellite network in the country.
Through these stations, Starlink will establish connections with its Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites in the Indian skies, providing users with high-speed internet at low latency. According to sources, the company is also working on a plan to build 9 to 10 gateway stations in the future. For this, Starlink has already applied to finalize locations in Mumbai, Chennai, and Noida.
A New Dawn for Internet Revolution in India
Starlink's satellite internet service differs from traditional fiber and wireless networks. It can provide internet access without the need for any ground connection.
In India's remote, hilly, and rural areas, where mobile networks or fiber internet have not yet reached, Starlink's technology could prove to be a game-changer. In the initial phase, the company's focus will be on urban and semi-urban areas to test network strength and service quality. Subsequently, there are plans to gradually expand it to rural areas.
Stiff Competition from Jio and Airtel
To establish its foothold in India, Starlink will face stiff competition from established telecom giants Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel. Both companies are already preparing to enter the satellite internet segment — Jio is entering this race with its JioSpaceFiber service, and Airtel with its OneWeb satellite network.
However, Starlink possesses years of global experience, and its service is already operational in over 60 countries. If it launches in India at an affordable price range, it could revolutionize rural connectivity.
