Tension prevailed in Sidpa village under Tandwa police station limits in Jharkhand’s Chatra district on Tuesday evening after a police team that reached the village following information that a young man had been held captive inside a house by villagers came under stone pelting. Tandwa police station in-charge and police inspector Pappu Sharma, along with several other police personnel, were injured in the incident. Sharma reportedly sustained a serious head injury and was admitted to NTPC’s Sanjeevani Hospital for treatment. According to police, three rounds of aerial firing were carried out to control the crowd and enable the police team to leave the area safely. Chatra SP Animesh Nathani confirmed the aerial firing.

The incident began with a dispute among villagers concerning the young man. According to preliminary information, villagers were agitated over allegations involving alleged misconduct or rape of a woman in the village. The villagers allegedly assaulted the young man and confined him inside a house. After receiving the information, the police team reached the spot to safely rescue him and prevent the law-and-order situation from deteriorating. During the intervention, the dispute between the police and villagers escalated, following which the crowd began pelting the police team with stones.

The stone pelting intensified suddenly, forcing police personnel to retreat for their safety. During the incident, Tandwa police station in-charge Pappu Sharma was hit on the head by a stone and suffered a serious injury. Some reports said that he received stitches on his head. He was taken to NTPC’s Sanjeevani Hospital, where he was treated. Other police personnel were also reported to have been injured.

As the situation deteriorated, police resorted to aerial firing to disperse the crowd. According to a Live Hindustan report, police had to fire three rounds in the air, after which the police team was able to leave the village. Chatra SP Animesh Nathani also confirmed the aerial firing. Police said the primary objective was not to cause harm to anyone but to safely evacuate the police team from the uncontrolled crowd and restore law and order.

Additional forces were sent to Sidpa village after the incident. Special forces from the police lines were reportedly dispatched to the spot under the joint leadership of Tandwa SDPO Prabhat Ranjan Badwar and Chatra SDPO Sunny Vardhan. Additional police personnel were also called from nearby police stations, following which security in the village was increased.

Police are facing a two-level investigation in the matter. The first concerns the allegations against the young man who was allegedly taken into custody by villagers. The second concerns the identification of people accused of pelting stones at the police team and disrupting law and order. Police have begun the process of identifying those allegedly involved in the attack on the police team.

According to reports, tension continued in the area even after additional police forces arrived. Police appealed to villagers not to take the law into their own hands and said the matter would be taken forward through the legal process. The young man who had been held captive was later safely rescued by police. According to Live Hindustan, he was freed at around 11 p.m.

Some local reports also said that police vehicles were pelted with stones and damaged during the incident. However, different reports have given varying figures for the number of injured police personnel and differences in some details of the sequence of events. The number of police personnel injured in the attack and the extent of property damage are expected to become clear after the official police investigation is completed.

Police deployment in the village has been increased following the incident. Authorities are focusing on maintaining normalcy in the area and identifying those who allegedly attacked the police team. Police are also investigating the reason for the dispute and why the villagers kept the young man in their custody. The allegations involving the woman are also being investigated. The allegations have not been treated as established facts, and further legal action will be based on the findings of the investigation.

Information about Tandwa police station and various police stations and police officers in the district is available on the official website of the Chatra district administration. The local police machinery is responsible for law and order in the Tandwa area, while additional forces can be called from nearby police stations in serious situations.

The situation in Sidpa village is currently under police monitoring. Police officials have appealed to residents not to pay attention to rumours and not to take the law into their own hands in the event of any dispute. The injury to the police station in-charge and the need for aerial firing have made the incident a serious law-and-order matter. The police investigation will determine who was involved in the stone pelting, what charges may be invoked against them, and how the investigation into the original allegations involving the woman proceeds.

The incident also underlines that attempts by a crowd to punish a person or hold someone captive after an alleged criminal offence are not part of the legal process. The allegations are to be established through investigation and judicial proceedings. The police role is to take an accused or suspect into custody and conduct an impartial investigation. Following the attack on the police team in Chatra, authorities are now tasked with maintaining peace in the village and conducting the investigation without pressure.
