Supreme Court Intervenes in Bihar SIR Controversy, Upholds Voter Rights

In the Bihar SIR controversy, the Supreme Court has directed the Election Commission to simplify and clarify the entire process, keeping the interests of voters in mind. The Congress party welcomed this decision, stating that democracy has been saved from the potential harsh decisions of the Election Commission. Jairam Ramesh described it as a victory for voter rights.

New Delhi: Following the Supreme Court's directives in the Bihar SIR controversy, the Congress party has declared it a victory for democracy. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh stated on Friday (August 22, 2025) that the Election Commission of India's (ECI) approach was against the interests of voters, but the Supreme Court has steered it in the right direction. Ramesh termed it 'protecting democracy from the ECI's brutal assault'.

The Supreme Court directed that the reasons for deleting voters from the list must be clearly stated and that Aadhaar cards must be accepted as valid identification. This will make the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process more transparent.

Supreme Court Order for Voter Interests

The Supreme Court, in the Bihar SIR controversy, instructed the Election Commission to make the entire process easier and clearer for voters. The court also stated that the reason for removing anyone's name from the voter list must be clearly published for the public.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh explained that in its initial order on August 14, the Supreme Court recognized the Aadhaar card as an identification document, which the Election Commission must now accept. This step is considered important in terms of ensuring the safety and rights of voters.

Supreme Court Directives to the Election Commission

Jairam Ramesh said that the Election Commission's approach has consistently been against the interests of voters. He stated, 'The Supreme Court has taken a step today to further improve the process by involving political parties. The Election Commission is now completely exposed and discredited.'

He further added that this decision of the Supreme Court protects voter rights and reflects the strengthening of democracy. Ramesh described it as a crucial order that puts a check on the decisions of the Election Commission.
