California: Mohammed Nizamuddin, a 29-year-old from Mahabubnagar district in Telangana, India, was fatally shot by police in California, USA. The incident occurred earlier this month, on September 3. According to the police, officers received a call around 6:18 AM that day and arrived at the scene. Nizamuddin was found armed with a knife, allegedly threatening his roommate.
Given the tense situation, police opened fire. After being shot, Nizamuddin was taken to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries. This incident has plunged the family into grief and distress, and his father, Mohammed Hasanuddin, has appealed to the Indian government for intervention and assistance to bring his son's body back to Mahabubnagar.
Father Narrates Incident Details
Mohammed Hasanuddin stated that the incident occurred on September 3, and initial information suggested the altercation began over a minor issue. However, he added that the exact circumstances of the incident are not yet clear. He was informed of the incident on September 18, 2025.
Hasanuddin appealed to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to facilitate the return of his son's body to Mahabubnagar through the Indian Embassy in Washington and the Indian Consulate General in San Francisco. He stated in his letter that he does not know why the police opened fire, and his sole objective now is to bring his son's body safely home.
Police Chief Defends Actions
Santa Clara Police Chief Corey Morgan defended the police actions, stating that the situation had already turned violent before officers arrived. He reported that Nizamuddin was holding a knife and appeared ready to attack again. Due to this, the police had no option but to open fire. Two knives were recovered from the scene. Police stated that the injured roommate is receiving treatment at a local hospital and that this intervention "prevented further harm and saved at least one life."
Nizamuddin's Education
Mohammed Nizamuddin was working as a software professional in the USA after completing his MS degree. Amjad Ullah Khan, spokesperson for Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT), shared the letter with the media and urged the External Affairs Minister to assist the family. He stated that this is a serious matter and the government should take action from the perspective of Indian student safety as well.
