UN Update: India has clarified its firm stance on Afghanistan at the United Nations (UN). India has clearly stated that Afghanistan must be rebuilt and its territory cannot be used by terrorist organizations under any circumstances. This statement was made by India's Permanent Representative and Ambassador to New York, Parvathaneni Harish.
Peace and Stability in Afghanistan are India's Priority
India stated that it has a paramount interest in ensuring peace and stability in Afghanistan. India considers international and regional consensus and cooperation on important issues related to Afghanistan to be extremely important. India reiterated that its priority is a stable, secure, and peaceful Afghanistan.
India's Strong Message on Terrorism
India told the United Nations that no terrorist organization should be allowed to operate from Afghan territory. Naming organizations such as Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, Al-Qaeda, and ISIL, India said that it is crucial to curb their activities. Ambassador Harish appealed to the international community to take concrete steps.
Appreciation for Afghanistan's Stance
India informed that the External Affairs Minister had spoken twice with the acting Foreign Minister of Afghanistan recently. India welcomed the Afghan government's condemnation of the attack in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025. India stated that punitive action alone will not provide a solution, but rather a new, empathetic, and pragmatic policy for Afghanistan is needed.
India Leads in Humanitarian Assistance
India has been consistently active in providing humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan. Following the recent earthquake, India was the first to send 1,000 tents and 15 tons of food supplies. Additionally, 21 tons of supplementary relief material, including medicines, blankets, generators, and hygiene kits, were delivered to Afghanistan.
Since 2021, India has sent 50,000 tons of wheat, 330 tons of medicines, vaccines, 40,000 liters of pesticides, and other essential supplies to Afghanistan. India has also supported women-centric de-addiction programs in partnership with UNODC. Furthermore, India has provided scholarships to 2,000 Afghan students, including over 600 women.
India's Role in Afghanistan's Development
India has completed over 500 development projects in Afghanistan, covering sectors such as health, education, sports, food security, and infrastructure. The relationship between India and Afghanistan is built on historical and cultural foundations. This is why India has contributed to Afghanistan's reconstruction at every level.
Emphasis on International Cooperation
India thanked the UN's Special Representative, Roza Otunbayeva, and stated that India will continue its support in the future. India's participation in Doha and other international forums demonstrates its serious and active commitment to ensuring peace and stability in Afghanistan.
"Business as Usual Will Not Continue"
India sent a b message to Afghanistan on terrorism, stating that a "business as usual" policy will no longer be acceptable. If Afghanistan continues to provide sanctuary to terrorists, it will not be beneficial for its people or the international community. India has appealed to Afghanistan to adopt a new perspective and a new policy.
India stated that the Afghan people, living under Taliban rule for over four years, are not receiving the benefits of development and cooperation. The recent earthquake has further worsened the situation. Millions of Afghans are suffering from poverty, disease, and hunger. India described this as a time to show empathy and help the Afghan people.
