Thailand's Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has been suspended from her post due to serious allegations. Thailand's Constitutional Court ordered on Tuesday that she would not be allowed to remain in office until the investigation into ethics-related charges is completed.
Bangkok: Thai politics is once again heading towards a major upheaval. The country's youngest Prime Minister, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, has been suspended from her post by the Constitutional Court pending an investigation into serious allegations of ethics violations against her. Following this order on Tuesday, Paetongtarn has had to temporarily relinquish her responsibilities.
In fact, Paetongtarn was accused of showing excessive leniency in a confidential conversation with Cambodia regarding the border dispute. This conversation took place with Hun Sen, the former Prime Minister of Cambodia and the current Senate President. The audio of this conversation leaked on social media, after which a political storm erupted in Thailand.
Suspension order by a 7-2 majority
Thailand's Constitutional Court issued this order by a 7-2 majority that Prime Minister Shinawatra be suspended with immediate effect. The court clearly stated that she cannot remain in office until the entire investigation is completed. The court has asked Paetongtarn to file a response and present evidence in her favor within 15 days.
What is the whole controversy?
In the conversation with Hun Sen, Paetongtarn Shinawatra adopted a soft stance on the border dispute, using some words that were considered against the national interests of Thailand. On May 28, a Thai soldier died in the same border dispute, which caused a lot of resentment among the public. After the audio leaked, many organizations and opposition parties accused Paetongtarn of compromising the country's security and honor.
Paetongtarn gave clarification
After this decision, Paetongtarn, while giving a statement to the media, said, "I did what I thought was right at that time, keeping in mind the safety of the country and the soldiers. If my words have hurt anyone, I sincerely apologize." She further said that she respects the court's order and will present her case with full integrity. She also expressed her gratitude to her supporters who showed faith in her during this difficult time.
The suspension of Paetongtarn Shinawatra could again create political instability in Thailand. There has been a long-standing conflict between the army, the judiciary and democratic governments in Thai politics. Many people believe that this action against Paetongtarn may also be a part of this conflict. Minister of the Prime Minister's Office, Chusak Sirinil, informed that Deputy Prime Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit has been assigned the responsibility of interim Prime Minister. He will hold office until the court gives its final decision in this matter.
Experts believe that the Shinawatra family has always been the target of opponents in Thai politics. Paetongtarn's father and former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra have also been involved in conflicts with the army and courts many times. This time too, there are b discussions in political circles regarding the suspension of Paetongtarn as to whether this decision is fair or a political conspiracy is hidden behind it.
