The renowned Tomorrowland electronic music festival, held in Boom, Belgium, has been struck by a major incident. Just two days before the festival's start, on Wednesday, a massive fire broke out at its main stage. The stage has been completely destroyed in the incident.
The incident occurred while preparations for the festival were in full swing. Around a thousand people were working on site, but fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries. The organizers have confirmed this.
It is reported that the fire started on the right side of the stage and quickly engulfed the entire structure. Images circulating on social media show intense flames rising high and plumes of black smoke spreading far and wide.
Tomorrowland spokesperson, Debby Wilmsen, issued a statement saying, "Safety is our top priority. Emergency services are on the scene and the situation is being closely monitored."
The festival's website has also provided an update on the incident. The post reads, "We have suffered significant damage due to a serious incident and fire on the main stage, but most importantly, no one was hurt."
Festival Will Proceed as Scheduled Despite the Fire
The organizers are now working to ensure that the festival starts on time and that the attendees do not face any inconvenience. According to the organizers, the Dreamville campsite will open on Thursday as scheduled.
This year, Tomorrowland will run from July 18th for two weekends. As in previous years, around 100,000 people are expected to attend. Visitors come not only to enjoy the stage performances, but many also camp on site.
This Year's Theme Stage Now Only a Memory
This year, the main stage was designed according to the special theme "The World of Orbix." The stage, which was being prepared with lights, moving parts, and grand decorations, has now been completely destroyed by the fire. The remaining parts of the festival are now being shifted to the Freedom Stage and other alternative stages.
This year's lineup includes big names like David Guetta, Armin van Buuren, Lost Frequencies, and Charlotte de Witte. The organizing team is currently resetting the program's timing and stage locations.
Investigation Underway; Similar Incident Occurred in 2017
An investigation into the incident has been launched. The Antwerp Public Prosecutor's Office is overseeing the case. Initial information suggests it was an accident, but the real cause will only be clear after the investigation is complete.
This is not the first time that a fire has occurred at an event associated with Tomorrowland. In 2017, a fire broke out on stage during the Tomorrowland Unite festival in Barcelona, Spain, forcing the evacuation of around 22,000 people from the event venue.
Tomorrowland was started about 20 years ago by two Belgian brothers. Today, the festival has become the biggest name in electronic music worldwide. Millions of people come to Belgium every year to be a part of it.
Despite the unfortunate incident, the organizers are striving to ensure that the festival's momentum is not disrupted and that music lovers experience the same energy and enjoyment for which Tomorrowland is known.
