Trump announces 25 percent tariff on countries trading with Iran

Donald Trump has announced the imposition of a 25 percent tariff on countries that conduct trade with Iran. The announcement comes at a time when negotiations are underway between India and the United States on a bilateral trade deal, raising concerns about increased uncertainty in global trade and markets.

The former US president said that any country engaging in business with the Islamic Republic of Iran would face a 25 percent tariff on all trade conducted with the United States. He stated that the order would take effect immediately.

Trump made the announcement on his social media platform Truth Social. In his post, he described the measure as a final and decisive order and said there would be no leniency in its implementation. He added that countries maintaining any form of commercial relations with Iran would be subject to the tariff on all business with the US.

The Trump administration said the decision was taken in response to rising violent protests in Iran and the Iranian government’s crackdown on demonstrators. According to the administration, the objective of the move is to increase pressure on Iran’s leadership to change its approach. Trump has previously imposed stringent sanctions on Iran, and the announcement was presented as a continuation of that policy.

A wide range of countries currently trade with Iran, including not only its neighbouring states but also major economies such as India, China, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates. As a result, the impact of the announcement may extend beyond Iran to several key US trading partners.

The issue is of particular significance for India, as New Delhi and Washington have been engaged in talks on a trade deal for an extended period. If the tariff policy is implemented and India is brought within its scope, it could affect bilateral trade relations. India has maintained ties with Iran for energy needs and other strategic considerations.

Trump did not provide details on how the tariff policy would be implemented or specify which countries would be directly covered. He also did not clarify whether exemptions would apply for humanitarian aid or trade linked to strategic necessities. The absence of such details has contributed to uncertainty following the announcement.
