Two medical students were injured after a car allegedly driven at high speed by two intoxicated men hit their scooter near Prasad Aditya Mall in Rajamahendravaram, Andhra Pradesh, on Wednesday night. Medical student Priyanka suffered a serious head injury and was referred to Hyderabad for further treatment, while student Umesh is also undergoing treatment.
According to police, the incident occurred near Prasad Aditya Mall in Rajamahendravaram. The two young men had allegedly arrived at the mall in an intoxicated condition. Mall employees reportedly conducted a breath-analyser test and asked them to leave the premises.
The men allegedly drove away at high speed, and their car collided with the scooter carrying the two medical students. Both students fell onto the road and sustained serious injuries. According to eyewitnesses, the accused fled the scene in the vehicle after the accident. Police subsequently arrested both accused.
Priyanka, a postgraduate student at GSL Medical College in Rajamahendravaram, suffered a serious head injury in the accident. She was initially admitted to a local hospital and was later referred to Hyderabad for further treatment due to the seriousness of her condition. Her treatment is continuing under medical supervision.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu sought information on Priyanka's treatment and directed officials to ensure that there was no shortfall in her medical care and that all possible government assistance was provided if required.
Medical student Umesh, who was travelling on the scooter with Priyanka, was also seriously injured. He was admitted to a hospital, where his treatment is continuing.
Officials said both injured students are associated with medical education.
After receiving information about the incident at the Secretariat, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu sought a detailed report from officials and directed them to take strict legal action against those responsible.
He instructed officials to continuously monitor the health condition of both students and ensure that they receive the best possible medical facilities. The Chief Minister also directed police to conduct a fair and prompt investigation and strengthen the prosecution process so that the accused face strict punishment through the court.
The government said there would be no leniency towards people who endanger lives by driving vehicles while intoxicated and violating road-safety norms.
Police registered a case shortly after the incident and took the accused into custody. According to police officials, the two accused are residents of the Namavaram area near Rajamahendravaram.
Investigating agencies are examining the circumstances of the accident, the speed of the vehicle, alleged alcohol consumption and other technical aspects. Evidence collected from the scene and CCTV footage are also being examined.
The accident involving the medical students has prompted concern at medical institutions across the state. Student organisations and doctors have demanded strict action against those responsible and expressed wishes for the injured students' recovery.
There have also been demands for stricter enforcement of traffic rules around educational institutions and public places.
Police are conducting a detailed investigation and continuing action against the accused under the relevant provisions. The state government has also directed that there should be no negligence or laxity in the handling of the case.
