The US has decided not to play an active role in this year's G-20 Summit in South Africa. President Trump is upset by President Ramaphosa's statements, while India's PM Modi is set to participate.
America: The US has distanced itself from the G-20 Summit being held in South Africa. The White House has clarified that US President Donald Trump is troubled by the language and statements of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. A White House statement said that the Trump administration did not at all appreciate the remarks made by President Ramaphosa.
G-20 Summit Organization
This year, the 20th G-20 Summit is being held in Johannesburg, South Africa, from November 21st to November 23rd. The summit includes leaders from 20 major countries around the world, as well as two regional bodies, the European Union (EU) and the African Union (AU). Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India has departed for South Africa to participate in this summit.
Why America Distanced Itself
White House Press Secretary Carolyn Leavitt clarified that the US is not participating in the official meetings and discussions of this year's G-20 Summit. She stated that the absence of US officials is due to President Ramaphosa making negative statements against the US and President Trump. Leavitt added that the Trump administration did not at all appreciate this language.
Role of the US Ambassador

Leavitt stated that the US Ambassador in South Africa is present only to discuss the hosting of the next G-20 Summit (2026). They are not participating in any formal discussions or official negotiations. This means that the US will not be actively involved in the summit's activities.
Absence of US Officials
Donald Trump has announced that no US government official will participate in this year's G-20 Summit, citing human rights violations. In response, President Ramaphosa stated that the US's absence is "their loss." He also added that South Africa would proceed with the summit despite this situation.
South Africa's Hosting
This year, South Africa is hosting the G-20 Leaders Summit. President Ramaphosa will chair this conference on November 22nd and 23rd at the Nasrec Expo Centre in Johannesburg.
