Investigative Journalist Intimidated, Threatened at Vancouver Khalistan Rally

Khalistan Supporters Intimidate Investigative Journalist in Vancouver, Canada; Threaten PM Modi

Canada: A serious incident of intimidation and threats against investigative journalist Mocha Bajirgan occurred during a weekly Khalistani rally in Vancouver, Canada. The journalist reported being surrounded, threatened, having his phone stolen, and receiving threats against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with statements including, "We will end Modi's politics at the G-7."

Bajirgan has been documenting Khalistani activities in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand for an extended period. This incident raises new concerns amidst already strained relations between India and Canada.

Journalist Surrounded and Threatened

On Sunday, June 8th, 2025, a grave incident unfolded during a weekly Khalistani rally in Vancouver. Mocha Bajirgan, a well-known investigative journalist with a history of documenting Khalistan supporter demonstrations and activities, was surrounded by a hostile crowd.

While recording the rally, Bajirgan was approached by several individuals who began to intimidate him. He recounted how two or three people suddenly appeared, threatening him before one snatched his phone.

“I Am Still Shaking”: Journalist Recounts the Ordeal

In a phone conversation with ANI, Mocha Bajirgan stated, “This incident happened just two hours ago, and I am still shaking. They behaved like thugs. They were trying to stop my recording and snatched my phone.”

He further mentioned that the crowd was led by an individual who had previously harassed him online. Bajirgan emphasized that this was not merely a personal attack but a direct assault on press freedom.

“We Will End Modi’s Politics at the G-7”

The most alarming aspect of the incident was a comment overheard by Bajirgan. Some protesters declared their intention to "end the politics of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G-7 summit." When Bajirgan questioned if they intended to repeat what happened to Indira Gandhi, some admitted to considering Indira Gandhi's assassins as ancestors and viewing them with pride.

Such statements, advocating violence against a democratically elected Prime Minister, are not only unconstitutional but also demonstrate a dangerous mindset directed against India on an international stage.

Attack on Press Freedom or a Deliberate Strategy?

Bajirgan has been documenting Khalistan supporter demonstrations in Canada, the US, the UK, and New Zealand for years. He believes this intimidation attempt was premeditated. He suggested that under the guise of protest, radical elements are attempting to silence independent journalists and prevent the truth from emerging.

Bajirgan had a backup recording running to ensure the incident was documented. Vancouver police later intervened, de-escalating the situation and recovering the journalist's phone.
