Concerns over the safety and repair work at Vikramshila Setu in Bhagalpur have resurfaced following reports of a crack in a bridge pillar, exposed reinforcement bars and a crane sinking into marshy soil during the launching of a steel girder in the damaged section. Repair and restoration work is already underway on the bridge.

A crane reportedly sank into marshy soil while workers were launching a steel girder in the damaged section of Vikramshila Setu. Heavy-duty cranes and other machinery are being used to position and install the girders at designated locations before reconstruction of the road section can proceed.

The incident has raised questions about ground stability and the deployment of heavy machinery at the construction site. However, detailed information about how deep the crane sank, how long it took to recover it and the extent to which the incident affected repair work has not yet emerged.

The repair process involves removing old, weakened slabs and installing new steel girders in the damaged section of the bridge. The weakened portions were removed first, followed by preparations to install the replacement structure.

Installing heavy structural components over the Ganga requires specialised equipment and careful technical planning. Soil conditions beneath and around the bridge also play an important role in ensuring the safe operation of heavy machinery during the restoration process.

Reports of a crack in a bridge pillar and exposed reinforcement bars have raised questions about the condition of the structure. A technical assessment is required to determine whether the crack affects a primary structural component or is confined to the outer protective layer.

Photographs or surface-level inspections alone cannot establish the bridge's structural integrity. A detailed examination by technical experts, an assessment of the nature of the crack and an evaluation of the affected section are necessary to determine its condition.

Official information from the administration and construction agencies is awaited to establish the severity of the reported crack and whether additional repairs are required.

Vikramshila Setu connects Bhagalpur with Naugachia and areas of North Bihar. Built over the Ganga, the bridge carries a large volume of daily passenger and vehicle traffic and serves as an important route for local transport, trade and travel to other districts.

Traffic on the route is already suspended because of repair work on the damaged section. With the bridge closed, travellers have had to depend on alternative routes and other means of crossing the Ganga, affecting connectivity between North and South Bihar.

The ongoing repair work requires adherence to safety standards alongside efforts to complete the restoration. The use of heavy cranes and steel girders requires particular attention to ground-bearing capacity, machinery stability and worker safety.

The bridge's structural condition, the cause of the crane sinking and the timeline for completing the repairs remain unclear pending further official information. A clearer assessment of the situation will depend on findings from technical inspections and updates from the administration and construction agencies.
