The month of Sawan is considered the most sacred time for worshiping Lord Shiva. Observing a fast, especially on Mondays, holds special significance. However, if a fast is not completed for some reason, or if a rule is broken by mistake, feelings of guilt and worry can often arise. Whereas, according to the scriptures, the primary purpose of a fast is not just to remain hungry, but rather to cultivate restraint, devotion, and inner purity.
Why is the Sawan Monday fast observed?
This fast is primarily observed to obtain the grace of Lord Shiva. It is believed that fasts observed during Sawan quickly please Lord Shiva. Devotees observe water, fruit, or waterless fasts on this day and perform abhishek (ritual bathing) of the Shivling.
What to do if a fast is broken by mistake
No need to fear
If the fast has been broken unintentionally, it is most important to know that Lord Shiva is called 'Ashutosh,' meaning He is easily pleased with even a little effort. Therefore, there is no need to be overwhelmed with self-reproach.
Seek forgiveness from Lord Shiva
The Shiva Purana states that if a devotee sincerely seeks forgiveness from Lord Shiva for their mistake, He will certainly accept it.
Say with devotion:
"O Bholenath, by mistake, I have broken the rules of the fast, please forgive my mistake and continue to bestow your grace upon me."
This sentiment is what is dear to the Lord.
Observe a penance fast on the following Monday
In the event of a fast being broken by mistake, a penance fast can be observed on the following Monday. By observing the fast, performing abhishek, and chanting mantras on this day, the previous faults can be rectified.
The scriptures recognize this type of penance fast.
Chant the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra
After breaking the fast, chanting the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra yields special merit and provides mental peace.
Mantra:
"ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम्,
उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान् मृत्योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात्"
It is considered appropriate to use a mala (rosary) to chant at least 108 times.
Perform Rudrabhishek
There is a ritual of performing Rudrabhishek on the Shivling with water, milk, curd, honey, ghee, Gangajal, Bel leaves, and ash, etc. Perform this process with devotion and according to the proper procedures.
Rudrabhishek can please Lord Shiva and also lessen the fault of breaking the fast.
Make amends through donation and service
If the fast is broken, donate food, clothes, or water to someone in need on that day. This reduces the incompleteness of the fast.
Useful services:
- Donation of food or distribution of fruits
- Cow service
- Arranging water or shade in a temple
- Food for the poor
These not only earn merit but also provide inner satisfaction.
Common reasons for breaking a fast
- Accidentally eating something
- Drinking water before the scheduled time
- Mental or physical ill health
- Any error in the worship procedure
In such situations, the scriptures also show flexibility and prioritize sentiment.
