Assam CM Accuses Islamic Countries of Interfering in State Politics via Social Media

Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has made a serious allegation, claiming that over 5000 social media accounts, allegedly operated by "handlers" from Islamic countries, are supporting the Assam Congress.

Assam Congress: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has again leveled b accusations against the Congress, this time alleging that handlers operating from Islamic countries are running over 5000 social media accounts in support of the Assam Congress. He made this allegation in the context of the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections, describing it as the biggest instance of foreign interference in the state's politics.

Foreign Interference or Election Strategy?

Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that Assam's politics has never witnessed such a level of foreign interference. These accounts, he claimed, are consistently creating a pro-Congress narrative and attempting to mislead the public. He described it as an organized social media campaign linked to an international network, not a local one.

Although he did not publicly present technical evidence or detailed data to support his claims, he stated that government agencies are monitoring the situation and will take appropriate action when necessary.

Previous Serious Allegations Against Gaurav Gogoi

This is not the first time Himanta Sarma has made serious accusations against Congress leaders. He previously accused Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi of visiting Pakistan at the invitation of Pakistan's intelligence agency, the ISI. Sarma claimed Gogoi did not go to Pakistan for tourism but for training, asserting that they possess evidence of his invitation by the ISI.

He added that the Home Department only invites foreign nationals for training or official reasons, not for private tourism. He further alleged that Gogoi is collaborating with the Pakistani establishment, posing a national security threat that cannot be taken lightly.

Congress's Rebuttal

While there has been no official response from the Congress party so far, sources within the party suggest these accusations are a strategy to polarize the political climate ahead of the upcoming elections. Party leaders have also demanded that if the Chief Minister possesses evidence, it should be made public or handed over to investigating agencies.

  • With Assam's Assembly elections scheduled for 2026, the political atmosphere is already heating up. Social media has become a crucial electoral tool, with each party striving to enhance its digital presence. Sarma's statement raises several questions:
  • Is foreign influence on social media truly increasing?
  • Will the Election Commission investigate this matter?
  • Will there be an independent investigation into the allegations against Gogoi?
