Kolkata Rape Case: A painful and shameful incident occurred on the night of June 25th at South Kolkata Law College in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. A 24-year-old female student was gang-raped within the college campus. The incident took place between 7:30 PM and 10:50 PM. Three accused have been arrested in the case, including a former student of the college and two current students.
Identification and Arrest of the Accused
According to the police, the main accused has been identified as Monojit Mishra (31), a former student of the college and the unit president of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP). The other two accused, Jaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukherjee (20), are currently students. All three were presented in Alipore Court, and the court sent them to police custody until July 1st.
The Victim's Ordeal
According to the statement recorded in the FIR, the victim said that she went to the college on June 25th at 12 noon to fill out an examination form. She was initially sitting in the union room. The main accused then grabbed her and ordered the college's main gate to be closed. The guard stood helpless. She was then taken to the guard room, where she was forcibly raped.
Repeated Brutality
The victim stated, "They dragged me into the room and raped me. I touched their feet, pleaded with them to let me go, but they didn't listen. I said that I was having trouble breathing and take me to the hospital, but they ignored me."
The victim reported that the accused were making a video of her and threatened to viral it if she did not cooperate. They also said that they would kill her friend and get her parents arrested. She said that when she tried to escape, she was threatened with a hockey stick.
Immediately after the incident, the victim underwent a medical examination. The police inspected the college campus and preserved the evidence for forensic examination. Mobile phones, digital evidence, and video clips have been seized from the scene.
Legal Process Ongoing
Public Prosecutor Saurin Ghoshal said that medical evidence has been shown to the court and the court has allowed the police to keep the accused in custody until July 1st. On the other hand, defense lawyer Azam Khan says that the entire incident should be thoroughly investigated and allegations should not be spread without confirmation.
The Role of College Administration and the Guard Under Scrutiny
Since the incident happened inside the college campus, serious questions are being raised about the security arrangements and the role of the administration. The victim said that the guard did not help and the accused openly dragged her into the room. This raises the question of how such an incident occurred in such a sensitive institution and why no attempt was made to stop it.
