Star Indian fast bowler Mohammad Shami has received a major setback from the Calcutta High Court. The court has ordered Shami to pay maintenance to his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan.
Sports News: Indian cricket team's star fast bowler Mohammad Shami has suffered a major blow in his personal life from the Calcutta High Court. In the long-running divorce and maintenance dispute with his wife, Hasin Jahan, the court has ordered Shami to pay a maintenance of ₹4 lakh per month. This amount includes ₹1.5 lakh for his wife and ₹2.5 lakh for the upkeep of their daughter, Aaira.
Justice Ajay Mukherjee's court, while delivering the verdict, partially supported Hasin Jahan's petition. Initially, Hasin Jahan had demanded ₹7 lakh per month, which the court dismissed, considering her income and circumstances, and fixed the amount at ₹4 lakh per month.
The dispute has been ongoing for many years
The legal battle between Mohammad Shami and Hasin Jahan is not new. In 2018, Hasin Jahan had leveled serious allegations against Shami, including domestic violence and extra-marital affairs. After this, the relationship between the two soured, and the matter reached the court. Earlier, the Alipore Court had ordered Shami to pay ₹80,000 per month, which included ₹50,000 for the wife and ₹30,000 for the daughter. Hasin Jahan found this amount insufficient and challenged it in the Calcutta High Court.
Hasin Jahan stated that her monthly expenses were around ₹6.5 lakh and that Shami's annual income was around ₹7.5 crore. The court, after analyzing Shami's income and Hasin Jahan's needs, fixed the maintenance at ₹4 lakh per month.
What will Shami do now?
No official statement has yet been released by Mohammad Shami regarding the court's order. It is believed that Shami may also appeal against this decision, as this matter has been circulating between lower courts and the High Court for several years. Hasin Jahan had argued that she had limited sources of income, while Shami is an international cricketer and earns a good income from the IPL and BCCI. Shami, in his argument, had stated that Hasin Jahan earns money through modeling and is not entirely dependent on him.
This family dispute of Mohammad Shami has been in the news for the past 5-6 years, but it did not have a significant impact on his cricketing career. Shami has consistently performed brilliantly during this time and maintained his place in the Indian team.
However, his problems in his personal life continued to increase. Despite allegations of domestic violence and match-fixing, Shami silenced his critics with his excellent bowling on the field. Even the BCCI's anti-corruption unit, after investigation, found the match-fixing allegations against Shami to be false.
