Rajasthan has a new Director General of Police (DGP). Senior IPS officer Rajiv Kumar Sharma, of the 1990 batch, took charge as the state police chief on July 3, 2025. The appointment of Sharma, who has an experienced, educated, and multifaceted administrative background, is not only an acknowledgment of his seniority but also raises hopes for giving a new direction to the state's law and order.
From Mathura to Marudhara
Born on March 15, 1966, in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, Rajiv Sharma obtained his initial education and later earned M.A. and M.Phil degrees. In 1990, he passed the prestigious Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination and was appointed as an IPS officer in the Rajasthan cadre.
During his service of more than three decades, Sharma has served as Superintendent of Police in many important districts of the state. He has always been considered a reliable officer due to his work style, discipline, and administrative understanding.
Responsibilities in various districts of Rajasthan
Rajiv Sharma's career has been marked by holding key positions in many districts. He served as Superintendent of Police (SP) in districts like Jhalawar, Dausa, Rajsamand, Jaipur Traffic, Bharatpur, and Jaipur North.
In addition, he also served as IG (IG) in the Bharatpur range and Bikaner range. Under his leadership, many major law and order challenges were resolved, and discipline and strictness increased in the police department.
At the state level, he worked in highly sensitive and influential positions such as Director General of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), DG (Law and Order), and Director of the Rajasthan Police Academy.
Important roles in the Central Government as well
After his b performance in the state, the Central Government also assigned important responsibilities to Rajiv Sharma. He has served as Joint Director of the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) in Delhi. There, he oversaw many major and sensitive cases.
In addition, he was made the Director General of the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) in New Delhi, where he guided the police training, research, and modernization plans for the entire country.

Considering Rajiv Sharma's seniority, impeccable service record, and diverse experiences, the state government chose him for the top police post.
After the retirement of former DGP Ravi Prakash Meherda, Rajiv Sharma took command of the Rajasthan Police on July 3, 2025. His tenure will be for two years.
