West Bengal: The Bharatiya Janata Party in Bengal has got a new leader. Shamik Bhattacharya, a senior party leader and Rajya Sabha MP, has been appointed as the state BJP president. Former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad formally announced his name and handed over the certificate during a grand ceremony held at Science City in Kolkata. Shamik was unanimously elected as the state president.
Vow to Remove Trinamool
Upon assuming the responsibility of the president, Shamik Bhattacharya reiterated his resolve to remove the Trinamool Congress from power in the upcoming assembly elections next year. He said that the defeat of the Trinamool is certain in the upcoming elections and no power can save it now. Thousands of BJP workers and leaders gave him a warm welcome at the event held in Science City.
Welcome in the Presence of Senior Leaders
On this occasion, the outgoing president and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar, Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Suvendu Adhikari, Bengal BJP's central in-charge Sunil Bansal, senior leader Mangal Pandey, along with many MPs, MLAs, and other party leaders were present. Sukanta Majumdar, while handing over the responsibility to Shamik, said that we will all fight the elections under his leadership and remove the Trinamool from power.
Political Journey Began with RSS
Shamik Bhattacharya's political life began as a disciplined worker. He started participating in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) branches in his school days. After this, he joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and from here his political journey progressed.
Increased Influence in Yuva Morcha
In the 1990s, Shamik stepped into active politics with the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM). During this time, he met and developed close relations with Rahul Sinha, a prominent leader of the BJP, who later became the state BJP president. During his days in the Yuva Morcha, he established his identity in the party's organizational structure with his hard work and capability.
Electoral Struggle and Victory
Shamik Bhattacharya contested the Shyamapukur assembly seat in 2006 and the Basirhat Lok Sabha seat in 2014, but he faced defeat in both. However, in the Basirhat Dakshin assembly by-election held in 2014, he registered a victory and became an MLA for the first time. This victory proved to be a turning point in his political life.
Refused to Become a Minister
It is said that after the victory, he was offered the post of minister by the Trinamool Congress, but he turned it down. This step reflects his loyalty and ideological commitment to the party.
Shamik's stature in the BJP continued to grow. As a party spokesperson, he always garnered attention by presenting his views in a calm, balanced, and logical manner. Even in the opposing camp, he is seen as a calm and balanced leader. Those close to him say that he never complained against anyone within the party and always remained loyal to the organization.
Rajya Sabha Membership Increased Influence
The BJP, by sending Bhattacharya to the Rajya Sabha, sealed his growing political stature. This indicated that the party was preparing him for greater responsibilities. The decision to make him the state president also makes it clear that the party wants to enter the upcoming assembly elections with a new strategy under the leadership of Shamik Bhattacharya.
