Anant Ambani Appointed Executive Director of Reliance Industries, Effective May 1, 2025.
Reliance Industries: Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has appointed Anant Ambani as an Executive Director, as part of its succession plan. He will assume the role on May 1, 2025, for an initial term of five years, subject to shareholder approval.
Previously a non-executive director on the Reliance board, Anant Ambani will now become part of the company's core leadership team. In this new capacity, he will play an active role in shaping Reliance's long-term strategy, particularly in its new energy initiatives and net-zero goals. Reliance aims to become a net-zero carbon company by 2035, focusing on green energy, carbon capture technology, and recycling.
Already Holding Significant Roles within the Company
Anant Ambani has served on the board of Jio Platforms Limited since March 2020 and Reliance Retail Ventures Limited since May 2022. He has also been a board member of Reliance New Energy and Reliance New Solar Energy since June 2021 and Reliance Foundation, the group's CSR arm, since September 2022.
He is a graduate of Brown University and has gained experience in several key business ventures within the company.
First Ambani Family Member to Hold the Executive Director Position
Anant is the first of the younger generation of the Ambani family to be appointed as an Executive Director at Reliance Industries. His brother, Akash Ambani, chairs Jio Infocomm, and his sister, Isha Ambani, leads the Reliance Retail business.
Appointment Sparks Some Debate
While the board unanimously approved Anant's appointment, concerns regarding his age and experience were raised by some institutional advisors in 2023 when he was initially appointed as a director. The Indian advisory firm IIAS and the US firm ISS suggested that shareholders should consider his relative lack of experience and youth. However, since then, Anant Ambani has further solidified his role by contributing to leadership across various facets of the company.
