Patna: The controversy surrounding Holi and Friday prayers in Darbhanga, Bihar, has intensified. Mayor Anjum Ara suggested a two-hour break in Holi celebrations during prayer time to maintain religious harmony. The BJP bly reacted to this statement, terming it a display of "terrorist mentality," while the JD(U) supported the mayor. Political rhetoric has intensified, and all eyes are now on the district administration's decision.

Mayor Anjum Ara's Statement: 'Two-Hour Break During Holi'

Following a meeting of the district peace committee, Darbhanga's Mayor Anjum Ara told the media that the timing of Friday prayers cannot be changed, and therefore, those celebrating Holi should maintain a distance from mosques between 12:30 PM and 2:00 PM. She stated that some anti-social elements attempt to disrupt the peace, and this step would be better to maintain harmony.

The BJP bly criticized Mayor Anjum Ara's statement. Party MLA Haribhushan Thakur said, "No restrictions will be imposed on Holi. The mayor displays a terrorist mentality. Holi has never been stopped and will never be stopped."

JD(U)'s Support, Political Tensions Rise

It is noteworthy that Mayor Anjum Ara joined the JD(U) in 2023. JD(U) leaders have supported her statement, describing it as an attempt to maintain peace. The ensuing tug-of-war between the BJP and JD(U) over this issue has heated up Bihar's political climate. The mayor has also presented her case to the district administration, but no official decision has yet been made by the administration.

Due to this controversy, the administration has increased its vigilance regarding law and order in Darbhanga. It remains to be seen what stance the administration takes and how much political dimension this issue will further acquire.
