To further enhance the safety and efficiency of police personnel in Delhi, training in the Israeli self-defense technique ‘Krav Maga’ will now be mandatory.

New Delhi: As the nation's capital, the Delhi Police faces the significant challenge of maintaining law and order throughout the year. To effectively discharge this responsibility, the Delhi Police regularly upgrades its training and skills. To further enhance the safety and efficiency of police personnel in Delhi, training in the Israeli self-defense technique ‘Krav Maga’ will now be mandatory. In the first phase, 50 police personnel have been sent to the ITBP Training Centre in Panchkula for training in this specialized martial art.

What is Krav Maga and why is it necessary?

Krav Maga is an effective self-defense technique developed by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). It combines techniques from various martial arts such as boxing, judo, karate, and wrestling. Its primary objective is immediate self-defense by neutralizing an attacker. Delhi Police personnel often face situations where, being unarmed, they become targets for criminals.

In recent years, there have been several incidents where anti-social elements attacked police personnel. Krav Maga will help police officers protect themselves and subdue attackers even without weapons. In the first phase, the Delhi Police has sent 50 personnel, including 19 women, to the ITBP Training Centre in Panchkula. ITBP experts trained by Israeli instructors are providing the training. After this training, these police personnel will train new police batches.

Key aspects of the training

Defense against armed and unarmed attacks
Strategies for handling unexpected street encounters
Techniques for self-defense against knives, guns, and other weapons
Skills to quickly and effectively subdue an opponent

Three-month training, followed by new batches

The Delhi Police has selected two police personnel from each district and unit for this training. The first batch of trainees will undergo intensive training in a three-month camp. Two more batches will then receive training, further enhancing the self-defense capabilities of Delhi Police personnel in the future.

The Delhi Police initially requested this specialized training from the NSG (National Security Guard), but due to logistical and other administrative reasons, the NSG could not undertake the responsibility. Subsequently, the Director General of ITBP (Indo-Tibetan Border Police) was contacted, who readily agreed and arranged for the training of police personnel at the Panchkula training camp.

Delhi Police's self-defense skills to be further strengthened

The Delhi Police faces the constant challenge of maintaining law and order in the capital. Krav Maga training will significantly improve the physical fitness and self-defense skills of police personnel. This will not only ensure their personal safety but also make them more effective in protecting citizens. In the future, this training will be made mandatory for all new constables and sub-inspectors of the Delhi Police.
