Haryana CM Orders Halt to Sewage Discharge into Yamuna River

Haryana CM Nayab Saini directs Deputy Commissioners to prevent sewage and drain discharge into Yamuna River, emphasizing collective responsibility for its cleanliness.

Yamuna River Pollution: The Haryana government has adopted a strict stance on the increasing pollution in the Yamuna River. Chief Minister Nayab Saini has explicitly instructed officials to prevent the discharge of sewage or polluted drain water into the Yamuna under any circumstances. Deputy Commissioners of Panipat, Sonipat, Palwal, and Yamunanagar districts have been specifically instructed to establish Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) to treat wastewater before it reaches the river.

Yamuna's Cleanliness a Collective Responsibility: CM Saini

During a meeting of the Haryana State Drought Relief and Flood Control Board on Saturday with Irrigation and Water Resources Minister Shruti Chaudhary, Chief Minister Nayab Saini stated that the cleanliness of the Yamuna is a collective responsibility of all citizens, not just the government. He directed officials to establish alternative arrangements for sewage disposal and ensure proper monitoring of treatment plant maintenance.

Instructions to Deputy Commissioners for Flood Control

To prevent waterlogging in the state, the Chief Minister instructed Deputy Commissioners to clean drains and desilt canals. Furthermore, while reviewing flood control projects, he emphasized their timely completion. He ordered that accountability be fixed and necessary action be taken against officials responsible for any delays or shortcomings in projects.

Instructions to Strengthen Embankments

Emphasis was also placed on strengthening river embankments near villages and constructing stone studs to prevent land erosion. The Chief Minister instructed Deputy Commissioners to survey stone studs and repair them as needed. He ordered the filing of FIRs against negligent contractors.

Emphasis on Equitable Irrigation Water Distribution

Chief Minister Saini emphasized equitable distribution of irrigation water, stating that all canals should be cleaned and repaired to avoid water shortages during the summer. He also instructed officials to clean reservoirs and make necessary arrangements for drinking water supply.

Approval for 352 Flood Control Schemes

The meeting approved 352 flood control schemes worth ₹658 crore. The Chief Minister instructed officials to complete the procurement of pumps and other necessary works before June 30th. He also directed them to expedite the pipeline laying and motor panel procurement processes for water drainage in waterlogged areas.
