IUML Expresses Displeasure Over Priyanka Gandhi's Absence During Lok Sabha Debate on Waqf Amendment Bill. Kerala's Samastha Kerala Jem-Iyatul Ulama Terms it a "Black Mark." Congress MP Nasir Hussain Declares the Bill Unconstitutional and Unjust.
Waqf Bill: The Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 has ignited political debate across the nation. The absence of Wayanad MP and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi during the Lok Sabha discussion on this crucial bill has angered the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). Suprabhatham, the mouthpiece of Samastha Kerala Jem-Iyatul Ulama, a prominent religious organization in Kerala, termed Priyanka Gandhi's absence a "black mark," questioning her whereabouts while the ruling BJP was introducing the bill.
Criticism of Rahul Gandhi's Silence
The Suprabhatham article also expressed dissatisfaction with Rahul Gandhi's silence. The article stated that the opposition had a responsibility to openly address this sensitive issue in Parliament. However, the article also acknowledged that the Congress, TMC, and Left parties, under the India alliance, opposed the bill, but questions remain regarding the active participation of top leaders.
Opposition's Protest; Congress MP Calls it Unconstitutional
In the Rajya Sabha, Congress MP Syed Nasir Hussain termed the bill unconstitutional and unjust, stating, "This is a constitutional issue. It is a targeted bill aimed at specific community properties. The government ignored all objections and passed it." He added that the debates in both houses were meaningful, but the government remained unmoved.
What is the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025?
This bill aims to make necessary amendments to the Waqf Act of 1995 to ensure transparency in the registration, management, and oversight of Waqf properties.
