Mumbai/Bengaluru: The language dispute between Maharashtra and Karnataka has intensified. Following an attack on a KSRTC bus conductor in Belgaum, the situation has become increasingly tense. What is the dispute about?

On February 22, a dispute over language arose between a girl traveling on a bus in Belgaum and the bus conductor, Basavaraj Mahadev Hukkeri. The girl demanded communication in Marathi, but the conductor replied that he only spoke Kannada. The girl objected, leading to an argument. Shortly after, several individuals assaulted the conductor.

Following this incident, protests erupted in Karnataka. Kannada support groups targeted Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) buses. Reports emerged of a Maharashtra bus being blackened and drivers harassed in Chitradurga.

Maharashtra Government's Strong Stance

The Maharashtra government has taken the incident seriously and demanded an explanation from the Karnataka government. Maharashtra's Transport Minister, Pratap Sarnaik, stated, "We will not compromise on the safety of our passengers and employees. Bus services from Maharashtra to Karnataka will remain suspended until the Karnataka government takes a clear stand."
