Amidst growing disputes with the Governor, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has targeted the central government, demanding greater constitutional powers for the state.
Tamil Nadu: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin ignited a nationwide political debate on Monday by introducing a proposal in the state assembly advocating for greater autonomy for the state. This decision comes at a time when the conflict between the state governor and the state government is at its peak. CM Stalin clearly stated, "The time has come to empower states with full strength; only then can India's true federal structure be strengthened."
Committee Formation: Former Supreme Court Judge to Chair
CM Stalin announced the formation of a high-level committee to conduct an in-depth study on this issue. The committee will be chaired by former Supreme Court Justice, Justice Kurian Joseph. Experts including former IAS officer Ashok Varadan Shetty and M.U. Nagarajan will also be part of this committee. This panel will submit an interim report by January 2026 and its final recommendations within two years.
States' Rights Being Eroded: Stalin
Stalin directly accused the central government, stating, “One by one, the rights of the states are being eroded. We are unable to make our own decisions related to our language, education, and policies. This is against the spirit of democracy.” He added that the country's diversity can only be empowered when every state receives equal rights.
NEET Controversy and Central Government's Disagreement
Stalin once again expressed his displeasure with the central government over NEET. He said, “The NEET Exemption Bill that we passed regarding medical admissions was rejected by the central government. This is an insult to the people of Tamil Nadu. Our fight is not over; we will challenge this decision in court.”
