Kisan Andolan: The High Court has taken a b stance on the arrest of farmer leaders by the Punjab government. Gurmukh Singh, president of the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Doaba), filed a writ of habeas corpus in the High Court, claiming the arrests were illegal. Following this, the court issued a notice to the Punjab government, ordering it to submit a status report by Monday.
Questions Raised on the Arrest of Dallewal and Pandher
On March 19, police arrested farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, Sarwan Singh Pandher, and several other farmers. The petition states that the arrests were made without prior notice and due legal process, rendering them illegal. The High Court has sought a response from the government on this matter.
Growing Anger Among Farmers in Punjab
There is b resentment among farmers against the Punjab government's actions. In Ambala and Shahzadpur, Haryana, farmers protested against the Punjab government, burning effigies in demonstration. Farmers under the banner of the Joint Kisan Mazdoor Inquilab Union and Shaheed Bhagat Singh Union led the protests.
Congress Creates Ruckus in Punjab Assembly
The Congress party vehemently protested in the Punjab Assembly over the action taken against the farmers. During the Governor Gulab Chand Kataria's address, Congress MLAs chanted slogans like "Jai Jawan-Jai Kisan" and staged a walkout.
Khanauri Border Partially Open
The clearing of the Khanauri border in Sangrur district is ongoing, but it has not yet been fully reopened. On Friday, 300 tractor-trailers were removed, with farmers retrieving 150 of the trailers.
Police removed farmers from the Shambu border, fully reopening it. However, Google Maps still shows this route as closed, causing inconvenience to motorists.
Shambu Toll Plaza Reopens After 405 Days
The Shambu toll plaza, which had been closed for 405 days, has reopened. More than 22,000 vehicles passed through on the first day. During the farmer's movement, 42 farmers and 2 policemen lost their lives, while 115 farmers were injured.
Operations of 6 out of 15 Haryana Roadways buses to Punjab have resumed, but 9 buses are yet to recommence service.
