Washington: China has issued a measured response to the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former US President Donald Trump. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Yunkun stated that China should not be made an issue in bilateral cooperation and that the interests of any third country should not be harmed. He further added that the Asia-Pacific region is a center for peaceful development, not an arena for geopolitical rivalry.

Analysis of China's Response

Responding to India-US cooperation, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Yunkun stated that China should not be made an issue in any bilateral cooperation, and the interests of any third party should not be harmed. He also stated that forming exclusive groups, engaging in bloc politics, and creating confrontational situations will not enhance security but could harm peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region and the world.

India-US Talks and China's Reaction

The talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former US President Donald Trump covered crucial issues such as strengthening defense cooperation, maintaining stability in the Indo-Pacific region, and making the Quad alliance more effective. A joint statement released after the meeting said both countries agreed to advance India-US defense relations and launched a new initiative called the ‘US-India Compact,’ aimed at boosting military partnerships, expedited commerce, and technological cooperation.

Both leaders underscored the need for a free, open, peaceful, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region and discussed strengthening the Quad alliance (India, US, Japan, Australia). China views this alliance as an attempt to curb its economic and military rise, potentially increasing geopolitical tensions in the region. Beijing has specifically objected to the increased India-US defense cooperation and the strengthening of the Quad, characterizing it as a threat to regional stability.
