Upon arriving in Colombo, Prime Minister Modi received a grand welcome at the airport. Five senior ministers, including Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath, were present. From the airport to the hotel, despite heavy rain, local people and the Indian community thronged to catch a glimpse of PM Modi. This scene reflects the emotional bond between the two countries.
PM Modi Arrives in Sri Lanka from Bangkok
Before Sri Lanka, PM Modi participated in the BIMSTEC summit in Bangkok, where discussions centered on Bay of Bengal regional cooperation. Immediately afterward, he arrived in Colombo, Sri Lanka's capital, for crucial bilateral discussions.
7 Agreements Expected to be Finalized During Bilateral Meeting
On Saturday, extensive talks took place between PM Modi and Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe. Sources indicate that at least seven agreements are likely to be finalized between the two countries. These agreements primarily involve partnerships in defense, energy security, digital connectivity, and trade. Work is also underway on three additional agreements.
Defense Agreement to Mark a Historic Turning Point
If the defense cooperation agreement is signed, it will mark a historic turning point in India-Sri Lanka defense relations. It would signal a move beyond the events of approximately 35 years ago, when India withdrew the IPKF (Indian Peace Keeping Force) from Sri Lanka.
India's Financial Assistance Receives Global Acclaim
Prime Minister Modi's visit comes at a time when Sri Lanka is gradually recovering from an economic crisis. India provided $4.5 billion in financial assistance during the crisis, considered one of the largest bilateral aid packages globally. According to Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha, India's assistance has been highly appreciated in Sri Lanka.
New Dimensions in Energy and Infrastructure
PM Modi and the Sri Lankan President will online inaugurate the Sampur Solar Project, which will significantly contribute to energy security. They will also inaugurate two development projects in Anuradhapura, developed with Indian assistance.
Spiritual Connection Also on the Agenda
Prime Minister Modi and President Wickremesinghe will visit the historical city of Anuradhapura on April 6th, where they will offer prayers at the Mahabodhi Temple. This visit is a significant step towards strengthening the cultural and religious ties between India and Sri Lanka.
