Last Updated: 28-03-2025

OpenAI's new image generation tool rapidly went viral on social media, allowing users to transform their photos into Studio Ghibli-style anime. However, this trend sparked a copyright controversy, with OpenAI accused of using Hayao Miyazaki's original artwork without permission. In response to the escalating dispute, OpenAI has now banned image generation associated with Ghibli and Miyazaki.

OpenAI's New Image Tool Goes Viral, But Copyright Controversy Ensues

OpenAI's latest image generation tool took the internet by storm. Users employed the tool to convert their photos and memes into Studio Ghibli's signature animation style. Even OpenAI CEO Sam Altman updated his X (formerly Twitter) profile picture with a Ghibli-styled version.

While the trend dominated social media, it also raised copyright concerns against OpenAI. Several artists expressed their displeasure at the AI company's unauthorized use of the Ghibli and Miyazaki art style.

OpenAI Entangled in Copyright Dispute, Artists Raise Concerns

Emmanuel Sa, co-founder of Sketch, bly protested the trend. He accused OpenAI of profiting from copying a legendary artist's style while giving the original artist no credit. He stated, "It's wrong that a billion-dollar AI company is making money from an artist's style that the artist might not earn in their entire lifetime." Sa's statement fueled the debate on social media, increasing pressure on OpenAI.

OpenAI Alters Policy; Ghibli-Style Image Generation Option Removed

Due to the growing controversy, OpenAI revised its policy. Users can no longer create images using any prompts associated with Ghibli or Hayao Miyazaki. The company clarified that this measure was taken to comply with copyright regulations. Notably, Hayao Miyazaki himself has been outspoken against AI-generated art, even calling it an "insult to life." OpenAI's decision may further intensify the ongoing debate between AI and artists.
