Rajasthan, the land of valor, glory, and royal grandeur, is set to celebrate its 76th Foundation Day on March 30, 2025. Famous for its historical heritage and magnificent palaces, Rajasthan is the largest state in India. To mark over seven decades of the state's formation, cultural and developmental programs will be held across various cities from March 25th to March 31st.
The Story of Rajasthan's Formation
Rajasthan's formation journey began on June 3, 1947, with the announcement of India's independence and partition. At that time, Rajasthan was divided into 19 princely states and three chiefdoms. The merger of these princely states into a unified Rajasthan took place over several years in seven phases. Rajasthan's final form emerged on March 30, 1949.
The Role of Sardar Patel
After independence, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and V.P. Menon played crucial roles in the integration of the princely states. They set two primary conditions for integration: a population exceeding one lakh and an annual income exceeding one crore rupees. Major princely states like Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur, and Bikaner, fulfilling these conditions, opted for merger with India, while some states like Dungarpur and Bharatpur initially showed reluctance.
Phases of Rajasthan's Integration
Rajasthan's integration occurred in seven phases:
Matsya Union (March 17, 1948)
Rajasthan Union (March 25, 1948)
United Rajasthan (April 18, 1948)
Greater Rajasthan (March 30, 1949)
United Greater Rajasthan (May 15, 1949)
United Rajasthan (January 26, 1950)
Reorganized Rajasthan (November 1, 1956)
