During a recent event in Ghatkopar, Joshi stated that learning Marathi is not mandatory for residing in Mumbai, adding that Gujarati speakers can easily manage. This statement has created a furore in Maharashtra's political landscape.
Uddhav Thackeray's Sharp Rebuke
Uddhav Thackeray bly criticized Joshi, stating, "If Marathi isn't necessary in Maharashtra, then where is it necessary? Those who try to belittle our language and culture will face the wrath of Maharashtra's people." He further demanded that a sedition case be filed against Joshi, calling the statement a direct attack on Maharashtra's identity and pride.
Raj Thackeray Questions the BJP
MNS chief Raj Thackeray also expressed his displeasure over the controversial statement, targeting the BJP. He questioned the BJP's silence on the issue, asking, "If this statement were made in another state, the government and political parties wouldn't remain silent. Why is the BJP silent in Maharashtra? Do they support Joshi's view?"
Raj Thackeray challenged Joshi to repeat the statement in Bengaluru, Chennai, or Kolkata to gauge the true reaction.
CM Fadnavis's Statement
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis responded to the controversy, stating that Marathi is the language of Maharashtra and learning it is essential. While respecting all languages, he emphasized that the importance of Marathi cannot be diminished. He clarified that the government is committed to prioritizing the Marathi language and protecting Maharashtra's culture.
