Imphal: The situation in Manipur's Kangpokpi district remains tense following violence against the Free Traffic Movement (FTM). One Killed, 40 Injured in Clashes

The central government's imposition of the Free Traffic Movement (FTM) is the primary source of tension in the state, with the Kuki community bly opposing it. They believe the FTM is detrimental to their safety and interests. During the protests, police used tear gas to disperse the demonstrators, escalating the situation.

Saturday's violence resulted in the death of one protester, and over 40 injuries, including women and police personnel. Protesters attacked security forces with slingshots, prompting a forceful response from the police.

Security Tightened

Security has been significantly heightened on NH-2 (Imphal-Dimapur Road) to maintain peace. A large number of security forces have been deployed in Gamgiphai and other parts of Kangpokpi district. Police and paramilitary forces are continuously patrolling to prevent further incidents. Late Saturday night, protesters attacked army vehicles, smashing the windows of at least five. An official reported that protesters also used slingshots against security forces, further exacerbating the situation.

The indefinite shutdown called by Kuki groups has brought streets to a standstill, with markets closed and transportation severely affected. Locals are living in an atmosphere of uncertainty and fear, while the administration strives to regain control. The government states that restoring law and order is its priority, and further security deployments will be made if necessary.
