AAP MLA Manjinder Singh Lalpura Convicted in 12-Year-Old Assault Case, Sent to Judicial Custody

Manjinder Singh Lalpura, an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA from the Khadoor Sahib constituency in Punjab, has been convicted in a case of assault against a woman. The Tarn Taran court delivered its verdict in this 12-year-old case on Monday and sent the MLA to judicial custody.

Chandigarh: A court in Tarn Taran has convicted Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Manjinder Singh Lalpura from Punjab's Khadoor Sahib assembly constituency, along with 6 others, in a 12-year-old case. MLA Manjinder Singh Lalpura has been taken into police custody, and the court has sent him to judicial custody. The date for sentencing in this case has been set for September 12.

What is the case?

The incident dates back to March 3, 2013. It is alleged that on that day, at a wedding ceremony held in Goindwal Sahib in the Tarn Taran district, MLA Manjinder Singh Lalpura, along with eight police officers and some other individuals, attacked a woman. A case was registered in this regard under Sections 354, 323, 506, 148, and 149 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

  • Section 323: Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt
  • Section 506: Punishment for criminal intimidation
  • Sections 148-149: Rioting and unlawful assembly

The court convicted the MLA and other accused and sent them to judicial custody.

Political Journey of MLA Manjinder Singh Lalpura

Manjinder Singh Lalpura won from Khadoor Sahib for the first time in the 2022 assembly elections. He defeated Ramanjeet Singh Sikki of the Congress and Ranjit Singh of the Akali Dal.

  • Ramanjeet Singh Sikki (Congress): 39,265 votes
  • Ranjit Singh (Akali Dal): 38,532 votes

Prior to this, Ramanjeet Singh Sikki of the Congress had won the 2017 elections. The Tarn Taran court has convicted Manjinder Singh Lalpura and sent him to judicial custody. The court will pronounce the sentence on September 12.
