Australia has made a historic decision to impose a nationwide ban on social media use for children under 16. From December 10, major platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube will block minors. This step has been taken to enhance children's mental and social safety and protect them from cyberbullying, depression, and harmful content.

Australia Social Media Regulation: Australia has taken a historic decision to ban social media use for children under 16. From December 10, major companies like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube will have to block underage users, failing which they will face hefty fines. This law has been enacted in Australia to protect children's mental health, prevent cyberbullying, and shield them from unwanted harmful content. Companies have been made responsible for age verification and account blocking.

Reasons Behind the Ban

This Australian law is the first of its kind in the world to legally enforce an age-based restriction to protect children from the harms of social media. The government has taken this step in view of deceptive lifestyles, influential posts, cyberbullying, and harmful content.

Experts state that continuous social media use can deeply impact adolescents' thinking and self-confidence. Children might unknowingly encounter pornographic content, drugs, or extreme cyberbullying.

The Law and Its Functionality

According to this law, passed in November 2024, platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, Snapchat, X, and YouTube will block children under 16. YouTube Kids, Google Classroom, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, and Pinterest are exempt from this ban.

The law places responsibility on companies, not on children or parents. Platforms must ensure that no minor can access an account. Violating the law will result in substantial fines.

Platforms' Preparation and Controversy

Meta (Facebook, Instagram) began removing minor accounts from December 4. Snap and TikTok are also introducing different features for age verification. Snap stated that users under 16 can deactivate their accounts for up to three years.

However, there is also criticism. Some experts and minors claim that a complete ban on social media will cut children off from the world, and they might circumvent the system by creating new accounts.
