The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced the Bronco Test to enhance the fitness and aerobic capacity of Team India players. This test is specifically designed to measure the physical capabilities, stamina, and speed of the players.
Sports News: The BCCI has implemented the rugby-centric Bronco Test to elevate the fitness of the Indian cricket team to a new level. The main objective of this test is to improve the aerobic capacity and stamina of the players. This process involves players performing continuous shuttle runs of 20, 40, and 60 meters, which improves their running ability, endurance, and physical fitness.
The BCCI has taken this step because, in modern cricket, it has become mandatory for players to be physically fit to play in long and consistent form. Team India's strength and conditioning coach, Adrian Le Roux, suggested adopting this test. He believes that fast bowlers should focus more on running and cardio workouts rather than just the gym, so that their stamina and endurance can be increased during the match.
Bronco Test: What it is and how it is done
The Bronco Test is designed in a rugby-centric manner. In this, the player has to continuously run a shuttle run of 20, 40 and 60 meters. These three distances together form a set and the player has to complete 5 sets continuously. In total, the player has to finish the entire test within 6 minutes. BCCI's strength and conditioning coach Adrian Le Roux suggested this test.
He says that this test increases the aerobic capacity and long-distance running ability of the players. Adrian wants fast bowlers to focus not only on working out in the gym, but also on the ability to run continuously on the field.
Difference between Bronco Test and Yo-Yo Test
The Bronco Test was mainly started after the recent Test series played between Team India and England. In this series, the fitness of the Indian fast bowlers was not at the top level. For example, apart from Mohammed Siraj, no other fast bowler played all five Tests. Indian team head coach Gautam Gambhir is also in favor of this test.
He says that if players have to play international cricket for a long time, then it is necessary for them to be physically fit and b in stamina. The BCCI already conducts the Yo-Yo test and the 2-kilometer time trial fitness test. However, the Bronco Test is different from the Yo-Yo Test.
- Bronco Test: In this, the player has to run shuttle runs of 20, 40 and 60 meters continuously. This test focuses on aerobic capacity and speed stamina.
- Yo-Yo Test: In this, the player has to do circular running. It has a main line and two sidelines, and as the level increases, the difficulties also increase. The Yo-Yo test measures endurance and response time.
Both tests are important for increasing the fitness of the players, but the Bronco Test focuses more on speed and shuttle run ability. The BCCI believes that the Bronco Test will improve the conditioning and aerobic capacity of the players. Fast bowlers will be able to play for a longer time and will be able to perform consistently high in bowling.
