The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has provided significant relief to its employees by simplifying its tournament allowance policy. Under this new system, pending daily allowances from January 2025 will now be disbursed.
Sports News: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has implemented major changes to its employee travel allowance policy. The board has introduced a revised travel and allowance policy, reducing daily allowances and eliminating the ₹7,500 contingency allowance. This new system aims to enhance transparency and equity in travel expenses and allowance payments.
Key Highlights of the New Policy:
The new policy provides employees with a daily allowance of ₹10,000 for domestic travel or tournament-related trips. Previously, this amount was up to ₹15,000, along with a lump-sum contingency allowance of ₹7,500. The new policy limits daily payments and eliminates separate payments for contingency expenses.
A senior BCCI official explained that this policy change was necessary because several employees were claiming daily allowances even while operating tournaments from the Mumbai headquarters, leading to disciplinary and expenditure control issues.
Allowances During IPL:
For the Indian Premier League (IPL), which typically lasts around 70 days, employees traveling for the entire tournament will receive an allowance of up to ₹700,000 (₹10,000 per day). However, a pro-rata payment system is in place for employees with limited or partial travel:
- Employees with limited travel: Can claim up to 60% of the total allowance.
- Employees not traveling (but involved in the tournament): Will receive 40% of the allowance.
- This categorization is considered a significant step towards preventing allowance misuse.
Allowances for International Tours:
Most BCCI employees receive a daily allowance of US$300 for international travel. This allowance remains unchanged from the previous policy. Honorary office bearers – such as the President, Secretary, Treasurer, Vice-President, and Joint Secretary – receive a daily allowance of US$1000 for international trips. These honorary officers also receive substantial allowances for board meetings or tournament-related travel within India:
- For a one-day meeting: ₹40,000 per day
- For a multi-day work trip: ₹30,000 per day
- This amount is set considering the senior-level representation and decision-making role of the board.
For the past few months, some BCCI departments – particularly finance, operations, and media – have had their travel allowances withheld. This was due to the ongoing development of the new policy, with payments paused to ensure clarity before disbursement. Now that the new policy has been notified, employees are likely to receive their outstanding payments shortly.
