Bengal BJP launches a scathing attack on the Mamata government over the gang-rape of a student at a Kolkata law college. The opposition demanded resignation, accusing the government of laxity.
Kolkata Rape Case: The alleged gang-rape of a student at a prestigious law college in Kolkata has ignited a political firestorm in West Bengal. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a scathing attack on the state's Mamata Banerjee government, criticizing its handling of law and order in light of the incident.
Sukanta Majumdar's Sharp Statement
Union Minister of State for Education and Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar said that daughters are not safe in the state's educational institutions. He also stated that this incident is an example of the deteriorating law and order situation in Bengal. Majumdar accused the Mamata government, stating that crime is increasing in the state despite the Home Department being held by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
He also recalled that there had been a horrific incident of rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at R. G. Kar Medical College earlier. That incident also sparked outrage across the country.
Suvendu Adhikari Demands the Chief Minister's Resignation
Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, calling the incident shameful, has demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He said that when the students of the state are not safe, the Chief Minister has no moral right to remain in power.
Suvendu Adhikari alleged that senior Kolkata police officers were in Digha at the time, when the Chief Minister was participating in a Rath Yatra. It was during this time that the serious crime occurred at a college in the capital. He said that the BJP would protest in this matter and hold the government accountable.
Accusation of TMC Links for the Accused
The BJP has claimed that one of the three people arrested on charges of rape is a student leader linked to the Trinamool Congress. The party says that criminals in the state are emboldened under the patronage of the ruling party. BJP leaders say that there should be a fair investigation into the matter and the accused should be openly expelled from the party.
TMC Counterattack, Calls it a Political Move
Trinamool Congress state vice-president Jayaprakash Majumdar, hitting back at the opposition, said that the BJP wants to take political advantage of this sensitive issue. He said that instead of political bickering, there is a need to work together to prevent such serious crimes. He accused the BJP of trying to mislead the public by giving a political color to every incident.
Bomb Blast During TMC Rally in Nadia
Sukanta Majumdar mentioned another recent incident in which a bomb exploded during a Trinamool victory rally in Kaliganj, Nadia district, and a girl died. He said that the state government is not sensitive to the safety of the people.
Questions Raised on Law and Order
The public is increasingly concerned about the continuous criminal incidents happening in the state. This alleged rape case of the law college student has raised serious questions about the functioning of the state government. BJP leaders say that if the students are not safe in Kolkata, the capital city, then the situation in the rural areas is even more worrying.
