Amidst Bihar Elections, Opposition Accuses Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of Vote Theft. Congress has hinted that an impeachment motion may be brought if needed. The Election Commission has termed the allegations as completely baseless.
Bihar Election: In the political climate of the Bihar elections, opposition parties have opened a front against the Election Commission. Congress MP Syed Nasir Hussain has clarified that the party will exercise its democratic rights and, if needed, may bring an impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The opposition alleges that attempts are being made to ‘steal votes’ by tampering with the voter list.
Rahul Gandhi's Allegation and the Opposition's Stance
The entire controversy began with a statement by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. He accused the Election Commission of manipulating the voter list in Bihar and deleting a large number of names. Rahul Gandhi, describing it as a threat to democracy, said that tampering with the voter list could raise questions about the fairness of any election.
Following this, opposition parties raised the issue in both Parliament and on the streets. The opposition said that if the Election Commission is not impartial, the roots of democracy will be weakened. This is why the opposition is now considering a stringent step like an impeachment motion.
Election Commission's Response and Stance
After the opposition's allegations, the Election Commission held a press conference and clarified its position. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said that the allegations of ‘vote theft’ are completely false and baseless. He said that the Election Commission is working with complete impartiality and will not bow to pressure from any political party.
The Election Commission also stated that the process of Special Revision of the voter list is underway in Bihar. During this time, 28,370 people have registered their claims and objections so far. The Commission informed that the time from August 1 to September 1 was fixed for this.
All Political Parties are Equal – Election Commission
In the press conference, the Election Commission clearly stated that it has neither a pro side nor an opposition. All political parties are equal. The Commission appealed to voters to exercise their constitutional right and maintain faith in the democratic process.
The Process of Impeachment Motion
An impeachment motion is a very serious step. According to the Constitution, the process of removing the Chief Election Commissioner is only possible through Parliament. This requires a majority in both houses of Parliament. In this process, the opposition will have to gather a lot of support, as this step is not considered easy in the current circumstances.
