The southwest monsoon entered parts of Bihar on June 11, bringing a rapid change in weather conditions across the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, b winds and lightning in several districts on June 12. Officials said the monsoon is expected to expand across the state over the next few days.
According to the IMD, the northern limit of the southwest monsoon is currently passing through the Madhubani region. Favourable weather conditions are expected to help the monsoon advance into other districts of Bihar within the next two to three days.
The increased monsoon activity is expected to bring a drop in temperatures and relief from humid conditions. However, b winds and heavy rainfall may affect several areas.
The weather department has issued a warning for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms on June 12 in Aurangabad, Bhojpur, Nawada, Nalanda, Patna, Gaya, Vaishali, Muzaffarpur, Samastipur, Darbhanga, Madhubani, Begusarai, Khagaria, Sheikhpura, Munger, West Champaran, East Champaran, Jamui, Bhagalpur, Purnia and Katihar.
Winds with speeds ranging from 50 kmph to 70 kmph are expected in these districts. The weather department has advised people to avoid open areas and weak structures during adverse weather conditions.
Patna is forecast to record a maximum temperature of 36 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of 28 degrees Celsius on June 12.
During the past 24 hours, rainfall ranging between 7 cm and 11 cm was recorded in different parts of Bihar. Supaul recorded the highest rainfall at 10 cm.
At IIT Patna and nearby areas, winds of nearly 70 kmph were recorded along with thunderstorms.
Despite the rainfall, temperatures in some parts of the state remained 3 to 5 degrees Celsius above normal. The weather department warned that heavy rainfall could lead to waterlogging in urban areas, traffic congestion, reduced visibility and damage to weak structures.
The administration has urged residents to monitor weather updates and take necessary precautions during adverse weather conditions.
